The Burgess Edge Edgebanding Router Bits

The original Burgess Edge is a matched profile pair of router bits with ½" shafts for use with a common woodworker's router for ¾" material.

Each of the two cutting tools consists of a shaft with a removable nut, two mirror image carbide profile cutters, and one or two bearings. The bits can be expanded by means of shim washers to accomodate the variations in veneer plywood and the significant difference in the thicknesses of melamine and MDF.

The Plywood Bit has cutters to remove material from the edge of plywood to form a concave dado. The two bearings that follow the uncut surface veneer allow the woodworker to leave a very thin knife-edge on the top and bottom of the plywood. The bearings of the plywood bit are tucked behind the carbide cutting tips. This keeps the veneer from slipping between the carbide and the bearing.

The Insert bit has cutters to form a mating wood insert. It has a rounded convex shape, which matches the contour of the concave dado in the plywood edge. The shim washers used should be the same as the ones used for the Plywood bit.

The natural wood insert is glued into the matching plywood dado to complete the finished edging. The image in the border to the left offers an example; we used contrasting wood for the visibility. You may request your own edgebanding sample from the Burgess Edge.
